What is Orton-Gillingham

What is Orton-Gillingham. Since Orton-Gillingham is a highly effective instructional approach. We use (O-G) for children who have difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing associated with dyslexia. Because Orton-Gillingham (O-G) is an approach to teaching reading, spelling, not a method, program, system or technique. O-G is a powerful tool of exceptional breath, depth, and flexibility our trained staff provide.

Because there is essential curricular content and instructional practices that characterize the Orton-Gillingham approach. It comes from two sources. First is that O-G comes from a body of time-tested knowledge and practice that has been validated for over the past 80 years.. The second source is O-G’s development. It comes from scientific evidence on about how children learn to read and write. Why a significant number of children have difficulty in doing do. How having dyslexia makes achieving literacy skills more difficult. O-G includes the best instructional practices for teaching children with Learning Disabilities to read and write.

What is Orton-Gillingham

The O-G Approach name comes from the foundational and original contributions of Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham.

Because the O-G Approach name comes from the foundational and original contributions of Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham. Samuel Torry Orton (1879-1948) was a neuropsychiatrist and pathologist. Since he was a pioneer in focusing attention on reading failure and related language processing difficulties. He brought together neuroscientific information and principles of remediation. As early as 1925 he had identified the syndrome of dyslexia as an educational problem. Anna Gillingham (1878-1963) was a brilliant educator and psychologist with a superior mastery of the language. Because she was encouraged by Dr. Orton, Anna Gillingham compiled and published instructional materials as early as the 1930’s. These instructional materials provide the foundation for both the instruction of children and teacher training in the O-G Approach.

Teachers and therapists began using the O-G Approach from its initial development by Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham. Because Orton-Gillingham is a tried and proven approach based upon scientific evidence of how children learn to read. It has helped many people learn how to read and spell. The approach is multi-sensory in nature. O-G teaches the child specific skills through sight, sound, touch, and movement. This helps activate the brain and aids in retention. O-G separates the sounds and skills of the English language into smaller component skills. The next step is to teach these smaller component skills.

What is Orton-Gillingham

The O-G approach is highly structured and sequential.

Since the O-G approach is highly structured and sequential. First each child needs to able to completely use that particular skill. Then each child progress on to completely mastering the next skill. Because most of our language is predictable. Each child learns the consistent rules and patterns of our language. Because the understanding of these rules and patterns enables the child to be able to read unknown words. Since the Reading and Spelling foundation is based on the consistent rules and patterns of our language. Because this same foundation is what enables the child to become a stronger and more accurate speller.

The Orton-Gillingham Approach is know as a one-to-one, therapist-child instructional model. O-G is also used for small group instruction. Because reading, spelling, and writing difficulties have been the dominant focus of the O-G approach.

The O-G Approach always focuses upon the learning needs of the individual child.

Since the O-G Approach always focuses upon the learning needs of the individual child. O-G practitioners design lessons and materials to work with children at their level. Because O-G practitioners present information by pacing the instruction. We align the introduction of new materials to reflect the child’s individual strengths and weaknesses.

When a person is Dyslexic, they need more help than most in sorting and recognizing the raw materials of language. This help includes thinking and use of language. Because children with Learning Disabilities like Dyslexia will need to master the same basic knowledge about language. Also they need to master its relationship to our writing system as all of us who want to become competent readers and writers.

Child Life Therapy staff has been trained in Orton-Gillingham through the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education [IMSE]. Since after learning the O-G approach, our staff have the training to develop individual O-G learning plans to educate each child to read.
